Artist statement:
Art inspired by Experiencing the strength of hurricanes and the dying breaths of elephants…living in awe of nature, yet sharing concerns about her fragility. Inspired by the remnants of ancient art found at Maya and Buddhist sites over 1000 years old, yet cognizant of issues that caused their demise. Seeking peace in art and hoping viewers find serenity and inspiration in the images. …a life of experience... self-taught... simple goals. To share a moment of quietude, a deep sense of tranquility, a place of haven. Respecting traditional elements of soft focus, tonal imagery, and subjects of eternal satisfaction. Embracing the power of the computer to layer images and produce though-provoking perspectives. May you find peace in the Beauty of Nature and the Mystery of the Ancients presented here. |
About the photographer: Hank Hammatt grew up at Mount Hope Plantation in Baton Rouge, LA. After an early retirement, he lived in a one-room thatched hut in the rainforest of Belize (www.belizehank.com), volunteered at a survival center for endangered species (3 years) and now works for elephant healthcare and conservation (www.elephantcare.org). He has been an avid photographer since 1983 and was a former president of a regional photography association. Because of the flexibility of the digital medium and concerns about pollution with traditional film processing and development, he has been shooting entirely digital since 1997. His files contain over 30,000 images. Many of his images document nature conservation programs. In the course of this work, he has been able to travel to many exotic locations and has cultural images from ancient sites in Thailand, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and Belize. His 30-acre Belize rainforest property, Heliconia Haven, is both a wildlife sanctuary and a botanical garden, featuring over 80 species of palms from throughout the world. In the arts, his interests are photography, sculpture (wood and stone), and sculptural jewelry (from natural materials). He also aspires to creating haiku, but, that is a more daunting challenge! |
